The University of Oregon Police Department employs sworn police officers, non-sworn community service officers, and civilian and student staff in a variety of roles.
UOPD police officers have the same authority and training as other police officers in the state and are certified in in accordance with standards established by the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards and Training (DPSST). The department periodically posts openings for both entry-level and experienced police officer positions. Successful applicants are sponsored by the department in attending the DPSST Basic Police Academy in Salem, if they do not already have current or transferable police certification in the state.
All uniformed officers in the department are trained in First Aid, CPR, and AED, along with other departmental trainings and standards meant to provide appropriate and professional service to a global campus environment.
UOPD also periodically hires Student Security Assistants to help support the department mission of providing a safe campus environment, while providing students an opportunity to gain skills and experience in the public safety field. Student Security Assistants are trained by UOPD, and are tasked with building lockups, general campus security monitoring, customer assistance, on-campus safety escorts, and helping manage special events.
